    Therapeutic Food protocol for Metabolic Syndrome:

    Rational:

    How can Therapeutic Foods help in the challenge to reduce of the above risk factors?

    There is a multitude of research that strongly makes the point that as dietary fiber goes up the risk of Metabolic Syndrome goes down (Grooms, 2013).     How does fiber do this?  It helps get rid of excess bile, feeds our good gut bacteria which enhances our SCFA production and reduces cholesterol synthesis, reduces macronutrient absorption, low energy density, gastric distension and increase satiety, delayed gastric emptying, effect on gut hormones, reduced post prandial responses.  All of this collectively helps to control body weight, cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure (Satija, 2012).

  • Crohn's Disease and Therapeutic Foods

    Crohn's Disease is thought to result from a complex interactions between environmental factors, the gut microbes, the genetic background of the patient, and their immune system. It is an autoimmune condition where the patient's immune system attacks their own intestines.  It was a condition virtually unheard of a century ago (Martzaris, 2014).

    A Therapeutic Food protocol for Crohns:

    Rational:  The interaction of commensal bacteria with the intestinal immune system is an essential factor in the development of inflammatory bowel disease.  Liopis et al., (2009) investigaged the immune responses to signals from the E. coli and the probiotic L. casei in Crohn's disease mucosa.  E. coli significantly upregulated expression of a multitude of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-a, IFN-y, IL-2, IL-6, IL-8 and CXCL 1); while the L. casei downregulated these.     Michael Gregor in his video, Preventing Crohn's Disease with Diet, sites a fascinating study from Japan where the researchers took a group of Crohn patients in remission, dividing them into two groups, telling one to eat no animal meat and letting the other eat in their normal way. They followed them for 2 years. After two year 92% of those following the vegetarian diet had no relapse where only 20% of the other group remained symptom free.

  • Detoxification and Therapeutic Foods

    Dr. George Kessler, Dr. Artemis Morris, and myself have started to work on a Therapeutic Food’s protocol book.

    This first protocol from Dr. Kessler and myself is designed to support the detoxification process.

    In today’s modern world we battle a monster, which is the underlying cause or at least a contributing factor of many or most of our health problems.  It can make us express or create genetic weakness, feel ill in numerous ways and create the diseases of modern life.  I am, of course, referring to environmental toxins, the bane of modern civilization.

    A Therapeutic Food protocol to support detoxification:

     

    Scientific Rational:

    Excessive exposure to toxic heavy metals or persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from diet or environment is inevitable amid [our present energy based] industrialization and [the subsequent] pollution.  Understanding of the detoxification ability amongst nutrients in plant based food offers therapeutic and preventive effects against these toxins (Chung, 2015).

    Garlic prevents methyl mercury-induced cytotoxicity in peripheral blood leukocytes (Abdalla, 2010), and protects against methyl mercury neurotoxicity in the brain (Belle, 2009). Garlic prevents cadmium-induced kidney damage and decreases the oxidative damage due to lead in rats (Suru, 2008); as well as reduces tissue lead concentrations (Senapati, 2001).

    Chlorella supports the detoxification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Yang et al., 2015) and inorganic mercury (Wu & Wang, 2014). Researchers investigated the influence of Chlorella on the excretion and tissue accumulation of methylmercury in mice.  The reduction of Hg levels in the kidney and brain were significant (Siao, 2011).

    Phyto Power with its combination of wild-crafted rosehip, blueberry and dandelion supports the shifting of the body’s reserves to become more alkaline which enhances its ability to detoxify (Minich, 2007). Denev et al., (2014) found rosehips and blueberries to supply the most potent inhibitors for lipid peroxidation.

    Beta Glucan High Potency Synbiotic contains powerful pedigreed strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species. Research demonstrates that probiotic supports the binding of lead and cadmium to their cell surface and hold on to them through defecation.  Singh and Sharma (2010) showed that L. acidophilus was able to bind and remove arsenic found in drinking water.  Robinson and Tuovinenn (1984) demonstrated that L. rhamnosus reduces the bioaccumulation of mercury and arsenic in pregnant women and children.  Shrivastava et al. (2003) found that Lactobacilli can transform chromium (CrVI) to its less toxic form (CRIII). The fibers and probiotic combination in the Beta Glucan support the regularity of the GI tract to remove toxins and help those with IBS or other gastrointestinal disorders (Lacey at al., 2015; Sarowska et al., 2013).

    Cruciferous vegetables contain secondary metabolites termed glucosinolates that break down to products that upregulate hepatic detoxification enzymes.  These enzymes are called phase II enzymes and are responsible for phase II liver detoxification—a critical component in the body’s detoxification processes (Nho CW, Jeffery E., 2001).  Our cruciferous sprouts magnify production of the glucosinolates 100 fold.

  • The Missing Fiber

    Dear Friends

    As dietary fiber goes up the risk of Metabolic Syndrome goes down!

    The greater our dietary fiber intake is, the more we reduce the risk for Type 2 Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, weight gain, obesity and diverticular disease as well as constipation (Grooms, 2013).

    The average American intake is about ½ of what it should be with the guidelines for dietary fiber from the American Heart Association and the Institute of Medicine being at 30g/day (King, 2013).

    Take one heaping tablespoons of the Beta Glucan daily and two--three heaping tablespoons of the Energy Sustain at least three times a week. Combine the two and make a smoothie as a meal replacement.  With this kind of dosing you will be adding around 10 grams of fiber.  And other wonderful life enhancing

  • Inflammation, Diseases, & No. 7 Booster

    Dear Friends,

    Chronic inflammation is a key risk factor to the growing degenerative diseases we are facing today.

    The No. 7 Systemic Booster is a foundational product that potentiates many protocols as it is designed to support multiple systems in our body's ability to overcome chronic inflammation.  Think of the foods, fiber, and probiotics in the No 7 as a communication switchboard that directs the different items in your protocols toward their therapeutic goal. That is the power of foods acting epigenetically (Han. 2007).

    No.7 2Research on the effects of foods and probiotics found in the No 7 is exciting.

    Liopis (2009) research demonstrated L. casei's abilitiy to downregulate inflammatory signals (TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma, IL-2, IL-6, IL-8, and CXCL 1) in Crohn's disease mucosa. The researchers conclusion was that live L. casei can counteract the proinflammatory effects of E. coli on CD inflamed mucosa.

    Ford (2014) meta-analysis on the efficacy of prebiotics, probiotic and synbiotics in IBS and CIC (the mean number of stools per week) found that probiotic had beneficial effects on global IBS, abdominal pain, bloating and flatulence.  Their conclusion: probiotics are effective treatments for IBS. Their degrees of effectiveness depending on the species and strains.

    The No. 7's bacteria strains and the supernatant were chosen by our Bulgarian scientists for their effectiveness supporting the inhibition of Clostridial species, as overgrowth of Clostridia is found to create a serious GI tract inflammatory problem (Kounev 2007).  The inulin, berries and fruit provides the prebiotic for the inflammatory reducing-strain of acidophillis, casei and longum.  Inulin is very bifidogenic.

    Fruit and berry polyphenols provide a myriad anti-inflammatory actions.  They perform as anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatories, anti-microbials, they protect against the diseases of aging.  They are also hormetic, that is they behave like hormones, epigenetically activating endogenous defense systems (Han. 2007).

    Lapshina (2015) demonstrated that the flavonoids in cranberry prevent toxic rat liver mitochondrial damage in vivo and scavenge free radicals in vitro.  They scavenged nitric oxide radicals, superoxide anion radicals, and hydroxyl radicals.  Novotny (2015) showed that cranberry juice consumption lowers markers of cardiometabolic risk including CRP.

    Colombo's (2013) research demonstrated the anti-inflammatory activity of pomegranate in the gastrointestinal tract.  Pomegranate is shown to help with gastritis.

    Howatson et al. (2009) determined the efficacy of a tart cherry juice in aiding recovery and reducing muscle damage, inflammation and oxidative stress.  The cherry juice appears to provide a viable means to aid recovery following strenous exercise by increasing total antioxidative capacity, reducing inflammation, lipid peroxidation and so aiding in the recovery of muscle function.  There is much anecdotal evidence for tart cherry reducing the pain of arthritis.

    Regarding the nutriceutical contribution within the No. 7, the Fructo Borate Complex contributes to inflammatory reduction by a variety of mechnisms.  Boron downregulates over zealous immune cells for unloading their oxidative bursts into inflamed joints.  Boron also decreases blood levels of CRP and increases blood levels of Vitamin D3. We also add extra Vitamin D3 to No. 7 at 400 IU per tsp (Scorei et al., 2011).

    Barley Sprout Nucleotides lower the blood sugar levels for hyperglycemics.  Reducing blood sugar levels also reduces blood LDL levels, and lower LDLs reduces the risk for oxidized LDL, a very dangerous inflammatory inducing free radical.

    Lee et al (2015) investigated the effect of L-carnitine supplementation on inflammation markers in patients with CAD.  CRP,IL-6, and TNF- alpha were all significantly lowered.  They suggested the use of L-carnitine supplementation to reduce inflammation in CAD.

    L- Carnosine is an exciting anti-aging molecule, much has been said and researched about it.  In short, carnosine works as an antioxidant to prevent the formation of oxidized sugars, also called Advanced Glycosylation End-products or AGEs. The less AGEs in your body the younger your body feels (Asif et al., 2000).

    Coronary heart disease's risk factors are high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, [high triglycerides], obesity, physical inactivity, diabetes and stress (Saini et al., 2010; Serino et al., 2014).

    Beta Glucan High Potency Synbiotic provides oat beta glucan, red beet fiber, chicory fiber (inulin), and probiotics; healthy food ingrediets shown by research to support the reduction in the risk markers for obesity, diabetes and CVD.

    Whitehead et al. (2014) performed a meta-analysis on 28 randomized controlled trial on the  effectiveness of oat bran beta glucans to lower LDL cholesterol.  Oat beta glucan reduced LDL and total cholesterol by 0.25 mmol/L and 0.30 mmol/L respectively at doses of 3g/d.

    As you can see the Beta Glucan High Potency Synbiotic contains five powerful lactic acid bacteria and three forms of fiber.  The suggested dose in the research above is 3 grams per day for individuals dealing with high cholesterol and the different risk factors. One tablespoon twice daily before the two largest meals will supply the suggested dosage in the research.

    Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis are of major concern for our aging as well as young population (Newnham RE.,1994; Devirian T., Volpe S., 2003). Osteoarthiritis results from lack of sufficient Boron in our diets (Devirian T., Volpe S., 2003; Helliwell et al., 1996).

    Osteoarthritis:

    Fructo Borate provides 6mg of elemental boron per capsule.  Each boron ion is bound to two fructose molecules.  All food derived boron molecules are bound to carbohydrates.

    Take 1 to 2 capsules twice daily depending on the severity of the arthritis.

    Osteoporosis:

    Surgeons have observed that the bones of patients using boron supplements are much harder to cut than those of patients who had not used boron supplements.  Approximately half the population in the US consumes less than 1mg of boron per day.  Supplementation with 3 mg of boron per day for post menopausal women has demonstrated improved calcium and magnesium retention by the kidneys.
