  • Ultimately, what's stopping the Green Movement?

The vision of The Green Movement is a noble one:  To feed a starving world with the restoration of our world's ecosystems, as pollution is reduced, drinking water cleansed, and green houses gasses lowered. The result of this balanced stewarding of environment and people will benefit all creatures and plants with increased health. For humans the pandemic of chronic degenerative diseases will cease.

For this green ecological mission we have many allies in the form of concepts, people and organizations. Last week we looked at Food Sovereignty, Via Campesina, and Agro-Ecology. In the future we will examine many more:  Permaculture, Biodynamic Farming, the One Straw Revolution, etc.- all amazing and powerful forces for the healthy transformation of our earth.  They are the rising tide of the green movement.

But this week I want for us to focus on the roadblock, and ask one critical question: what is stopping us from succeeding in our goal?

I turn to another of our friends, a giant in our movement, Ken Cook for one of the answers.

John and his son Ocean Robbins interviewed Ken Cook last April in their week long phenomenal 2014 Food Revolution Summit.

Who is Ken Cook?  Ken is president and co-founder of the Environmental Working Group and is widely recognized as one of the environmental community's most prominent and influential critics of industrial agriculture, US food and farm policy and the nation's broken approach to protecting families and children from toxic substances.

Ken said in his interview that our food problem is really a political problem, and at the end of the day, our politicians are holding the keys as to which of the green approaches will succeed: the chemical industrial green revolution or the ecological green movement? Ken Cook urged the audience to become more political.  It is time.  Congress men and women are constantly being lobbied by corporate interests (ie Big Farma); and therefore, we also need lobbiest, and more.

The problem with our food system originates in Congress.  How are they voting???  To this end EWG has created the Food Policy Score Card, that clearly rates how our elected officials have voted over time.  The EWG is involved with many issues from feeding starving people in our own country, to healthy school lunches, to farm subsidies, to factory farms, etc.  How has your/our politicians voted on these things?  They created the Food Policy Action Group where these comprehensive score cards are listed, and they inform us of the most important votes based on the judgements of some of the most expert lobbiests working on our side of green. Visit EWG and get involved with one of the most fundamental and important aspects of our green movement.

    Clinical Notes:

We are projecting 8 to 10 new products over the next two month, many of which we have been working on for over two years.  We are planning to roll out the new products at our dinner for doctors in New York City, the first week in November, and of course through our website as we bring them in between now and then.  One of the first of the new products will be our new and improved Blueberry Extract, that you have been so patiently waiting for.  This should be in by the first week of October.  I will detail you on it next week in my second email.

    The Last Quiz Answer:

Talk about symbiotic relationship in nature between the monkey, known as the Northern Plains gray langurs, and this gorgeous deer, called a Chital.

Predators of the chital include wolves, tigers, Asiatic lions, leopards, Indian rock pythons, etc- there are a host of them, and even though they can run up to 40 mph, it's good to have friends like the langurs.  Langurs have good eye sight and serve as tree top lookouts, while the Chitals have a good sense of smell to sniff out their mutual enemies.

The EWG will be bringing out their revolutionary food data base which will give us easy to  understand ratings of more than 80,000 foods (more than 1,500 brands) based on nutrition, hazard concerns and degrees of processing.  EWG needs our support to launch this Revolutionary food data base book.

  • Will the Second Green Movement feed the world?

We’ve looked at the first Green Revolutions and seen how it has missed the mark when it comes to feeding the world. In fact, many think it is one of the reasons for our worldwide problem of obesity and starvation.Let's discuss the second Green Movement, an important and needed movement that promotes farming with nature, organically and eco-agriculturally.  Yet it is failing, so far. Why is it failing to fix the world’s food problem, global and local environmental issues, and ultimately our health issues?

Can you idenitify this beautiful creature? Can you identify this beautiful creature?

What is ecological farming and how would this green movement succeed in feeding the malnourished and starving, as well as reverse our self-imposed path toward global ecological mass destruction.

For starter, and there will be more, here are some key words for us to get a handle on: Food Sovereignty, Via Campesina, and Agro-ecology.

Food Sovereignty now appears as one of the most powerful responses to the current food, poverty and climate crises. (Via Campesina website)

The worldwide pushback against the-industro-agro-food-cartel's farmland and food system global takeover is seen in the 200,000,000 peasant strong revolt called La Via Campesina.

The main goal of the movement is to realize food sovereignty and stop the destructive neoliberal process. It is based on the conviction that small farmers, including peasant fisher-folk, pastoralists, and indigenous people, who make up almost half the world's people, are capable of producing food for their communities and feeding the world in a sustainable and healthy way.

So what is agro-ecology, the official farming method that Via Campesina's chooses to follow?

    • The application of ecology to the design and management of sustainable agroecosystems.
    • A whole-systems approach to agriculture and food systems development based on traditional knowledge, alternative agriculture, and local food system experiences.
    • Linking ecology, culture, economics, and society to sustain agricultural production, healthy environments, and viable food and farming communities.

Sustainable agroecosystems maintain their natural resource base, rely on minimum artificial inputs from outside the farm system, manage pests and diseases through internal regulating mechanisms and recover from the disturbances caused by cultivation and harvest.  Click here for an inspiring outline of the Principles of Agroecology and Sustainability.

We'll focus on Permaculture, Biodynamic Farming and the One Straw Revolution next week.

Talk about symbiotic relationship in nature, this monkey, the Northern Plains gray langurs (Presbytis entellus), and the deer beauty above, called a Chital, certainly have one.

The World Meteorological Organization just released its latest atmospheric CO2 findings. The UN weather agency reported that the carbon dioxide levels in the world's atmosphere hit a record high in 2013.  It was the fastest rise measured in over 13 years.  Are we approaching the tipping point?

The industrial Agricultural Complex along with our whole global food procurement system easily accounts for 40% in the CO2 emitted.  We need a sea-change here!

  • Did the Green Revolution Fail? (Part 3)

    Dear Friends

Can you idenitify this beautiful creature? Can you identify this beautiful creature?

Why has the green movment far?  We have discussed the first green revolution and its focus on technology and science. The intention was to feed the whole world, but the results unbalanced ecosystems, destroyed soils, and displaced peasant farmers to urban slums.  A good example of the problematic side of the First Green Revolution was their addition of GMOs into their strategy— with the accompaning reduction in  plant and food diversity, the manditory use of herbicides and pesticides with the GMO seeds, and the sociological (legal, finanical and psychological) problems they have brought about.

The problems are so serious that many countries have banned the use of GMO in agriculture.

    • See in Green Facts below how our own U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service banned their use in the national parks.
    • See in The Last Quiz Answer how bee populations are dying because of their pesticides.
    • See in Clinical Notes about our Phyto Power, a product that delivers fruit and vegetable ingredients that are far removed from these GMO and Industrial Agricultural issues; product that is grown in rich, clean, natural soils, and provides the healing power that potent foods can only provide.

Today we realize the lessons and damage from the use of genetically modified seeds in agriculture. A consortium of transnational corporations (grain traders, processors, seed companies, chemical companies, biotech companies- the industro-agro-food complex at a global level) have convinced peasant farmers from all over the world to give over to these corporations their ancestral drought resistant seeds. Peasant farmers have naturally developed and saved their seeds for generations. This consortium's members, in exchange for these hardy, natural seeds, sold the farmers GMO seeds and pesticides. They have enticed the farmers with visions of modern new agricultural imputs, promised successful yields and increased profits.  (See this very important University of Hawaii lecture by Vandana Shiva).

The GMO giants are trying through their governmental influence around the world to lobby countries to pass policies outlawing the private ownership of seeds.  Their business model is to sell their technologically enhanced seeds and collect royalties on their use.  Total ownership on seeds of life is their goal.  Get to know Vandana Shiva, an activist for the cause of "Seed Sovereignty" - the right to privately own seeds. A global movement for seed freedom.

As Vandana Shiva relates, a PR program by bio-tech corporations was strongly put out to convince peasants to give Bt cotton seeds a try.  The campaign went so far as to tell the farmers that their particular Gods had ordained the use of these seeds; and the peasants went for it by the tens of thousands mortgaging their land to get  the seeds along with the herbicides and pesticides that went along with them. (Shiva's Hawaii Lecture)

The first year the crops failed.  they increased their pesticde imputs and the second year was not so bad.  However, the third year was worse, causing a finanical ruin.  The seed company and the chemical company representatives came in and took the land of the peasants as a payment for their unpaid debt. The seeds were not strong as the native seeds to fight and thrive in draught conditions. They were supposed to. Unfortunately, the bio tech companies did not take any repsonsibility for their failure to produce draught resistant seeds.

The sad facts gathered by Shiva's organization is that since the introduction of the Bt cotton into India, 270,000 farmers have committed suicide because they have lost everything. They drink the pesticides, lay down in their fields and die.

Here are the facts Shiva found:  The hybrid seeds into which the Bt gene has been introduced, need intense irrigation and therefore due to drought conditions more crop failure occured.  And, it doesn't control pests as evidenced by a 300% increase in pests where the Bt cotton grew.  This caused a 13 fold increase in the use of pesticides.  In the soil to which the Bt seeds were grown, scientists have found a 22% reduction of the beneficial soil organisms.  Particularly killed were the bacteria that decomposed organic matter.  1900 animals were found dead who had grazed on the Bt cotton fields. (Hear the full story)

GMO seeds were supposed to feed the starving world.  The overall results are quite another story—larger numbers of starving people, the destruction of topsoils, the destruction of biodiversity, a reliance on limited diet of 6 to 8 plants as our sole source for nutrition, the loss for thousands of indigenous peasants their farms, their seeds, livelhoods,  food sovereignty, and a worldwide food system under the control of a handful of bio-tech, chemical, and food distribution corporate giants.

What does all this mean? Not only are we losing the freedom to privately farm with our own seeds, we also find an uncontrollable rise of chronic illnesses around the world, which many scientists and physicians now believe is due to this increasingly toxic world.

This is one of the examples why the Green Revolution is failing us.  It doesn't embrace the totality of nature, the symbiotic and systemic reality of nature.  So, what is a viable alternative to feed the world and reduce chronic disease?  I call this the Second Green Movement where farmers use technologies that embrace the biodiversity of life.  That work with nature, that don't poison nature. We have labeled these methods of farming as Eco-Farming.

But I must ask the question, if these other farming modalities are so good why do we still have starving people, increasing numbers of chronically ill people?  Why is this system failing also?

    Sincerely yours,

    Seann Bardell

    The Last Quiz Answer:

How important is the honey bee?  Albert Einstein said, "if the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, man would have only four years to live."  Bees pollinate at least 80% of the food crops we rely on for sustenance. Without bees, many of these crops would not produce fruit, which means no more food for humans.

For the past 10 years, beekeepers, primarily in the U.S. and Europe, have been reporting annual losses of 30% or higher, far above what is normal or sustainable. Many U.S. beekeepers have experienced losses of 40 to 50% or more.

The cause is pesticides and herbicides and it is very serious.  In response, both the U.S. and Mexico have recently taken steps toward banning the use of pesticides and GMO crops that have been strongly linked to the widespread bee die-offs. (See Food Rev. Net.)

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced that genetically engineered crops and bee-toxic pesticides known as "neonicotinoids" will be banned in National Wildlife Refuges.  This ruling impacts more than 150 million acres of federal land.

They will begin to phase out the use of genetically modified crops to feed wildlife; by January 2016, they will be eliminated completely.

  • Did the Green Revolution Fail? (Part 2)

    Dear Friends

Can you idenitify this beautiful creature? Can you identify this beautiful creature?

What happens when we export our Western food and farming culture?

Before we continue with our discussion of the failing of the two green revolutions (thus far!), let us bring to view an example of the first green revolution and its unintended consequences.

The Micronesian people, which includes the people of Yap, are suffering from chronic degenerative diseases today.

"Vitamin A deficiency and chronic diseases are serious problems in the Federated States of Micronesia and other Pacific island countries. Nutrition education programs to address these in Micronesia have had limited success, partly due to lack of information on nutrient content in local foods."

"Vitamin A deficiency in Micronesia was first documented in the late 1980s. It appears that the problem is new and is related to great dietary changes in the past four decades. Imported foods containing little or no provitamin A carotenoids, such as white rice, flour and sugar, have increasingly replaced local staple foods including banana, giant swamp taro and breadfruit."

These were the observations of Englberger al. in their research entitled, Micronesian banana, taro and other foods:  newly recognized sources of provitamin A and other carotennoids. Journal of Food Composition and Analysis; 16 (2003): 3-19.

The researchers analyzed samples of cultivars (diverse varieties) of 12 banana, 13 giant swamp taro and 10 breadfruit and four other local foods for their significant levels of beta and alpha carotene.  The results highlighted the potential health benefits these multiple varieties of produce could provide.  As they stated, Epidemiolgoical evidence suggests that carotenoid-rich foods protect against some chronic disease, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and age-related macular degenration.

Yap, the Island of Stone Money, historically had shunned the Western culture.  They were a proud people, and reluctant to adopt the modern Western ways. When I was there as a Public Health Official between 1966 to 1968, my documentations and reports showed that they were a virtually chronic disease free people. They were healthy, living off the land and the sea. Maintaining a diet of alive, diverse, plentiful, potent foods.

But no longer. The Micronesians are experiencing the health issues associated with the Western highly processed, fast foods.  They have gotten away from their traditional fresh farmed foods.  As the scientist postulated in their above study if the Micronesians were to shift  their diet back to their rich horticultural and wild crafted heritage chronic disease would be greatly reduced.

What a difference a decade or two can make in the health of a people. One of the consequences of the First Green Revolution is the reduction in diversity of fruits and vegetables regularily consumed as a part of the affected cultures daily diet.  We have see this problem worldwide with chronic illness becoming the new norm.

Fortunately, this problem can be corrected and it begins with dietary changes, bringing toxin free, powerful, diverse, alive foods back into our regular dietary consumption. That is the point of the Second Green Revolution that we've labeled Ecological Farming.  And, this is the point of the Therapeutic Food Supplements.  Food can be just the right medicine to help our bodies.

Take a look at Clinical Notes and the potent ingredients in Phyto Power.

    Sincerely yours,

    Seann Bardell

  • Why is the Green Revolution Failing ... so far?

    Dear Friends

Can you idenitify this beautiful creature? Can you identify this beautiful creature?

Why is The Green Revolution failing ... So far?

There are basically two Green Revolutions, one that is destroying the biosphere, and one that can potentially create natural, balanced ecology on Earth.

In the 60s I was unwittingly part of the first green revolution as a member of the initial group of American Peace Corps volunteers sent into Micronesia.  The program was marketed as "Peace Corps goes to paradise"—and paradise it was.  I was a Public Health official with the assignment to assess the health status of the Yapese islanders (the Island of Stone Money) and to implement disease treatment and prevention measures.

This was the time of the rollout of industrialized agriculture with its inputs of new technologies like pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and mechanization to improve food production all over the world. The green movement started in the West and moved into the third world (the global South), with the worthy goal of eradicating all starvation. Our intentions were good.

In those days we were in love with the emerging discipline of organic chemistry and industrialized farming ideas, and how together they would change the world to a better place.  Just to give you a glimpse of our "starry eyed" ignorance as to any hazards of putting toxins into our environment:  the Peace Corp gave all health officials who were sent to Micronesia a 55 gallon drum can of DDT, to use as we saw fit.

Another example of our naiveté as to possible systemic consequences of adding toxins to our environment was displayed by a fellow volunteer, who had been traveling throughout Micronesia and arrived at my remote setting one day.  His duty, as an "Agricultural Specialist" who had been trained in part by the USDA, was to promote modern agro-industrial farming methods.  Upon viewing our lush coconut groves, he suggested, as he had been proposing throughout Micronesia, to poison every third tree as a means of enhancing the copra yields.

Herbicides and pesticides back then were thought of as the farmer's best friend for they killed only the unwanted things—so we thought then. Of course now we know better.  Back then, we didn't grasp the toxic consequences for the biosphere as a whole and the toll it was to bring on human health in particular.

"Though credited for saving the world from hunger.  The reality is that it produced as many hungry people as it saved.  And, this first Green Revolution led to the monopolization of seed and chemical inputs by Northern companies, the loss of 90% of the Souths agricultural biodiversity, the global shift to an oil-based agricultural economy and the displacement of millions of peasants to fragile hillsides, shinking forests and urban slums." (Food Rebellions!  Crisis and the Hunger for Justice. Eric Holt-Gimenez and Raj Patelk, 2009)

There is so much more to say and we'll share it in digestible, bite-sized amounts.  To be continued next week.

    Sincerely yours,

    Seann Bardell

  • Dr. Kessler overviews Cran. Pom. Synbiotic's possible benefits

    Dear Friends

Can you idenitify this beautiful creature? Can you identify this beautiful creature?

Have you seen our website lately?  Take a new look.  We are now creating changes and adding new features, such as facebook. Please like the BioImmersion page to keep up with all of our latest news and articles.  There is much more to do, but it is all in process as I speak.

Last week we introduced you to our Medical Director, Dr. George Kessler.  If you click on George's link here you can read his bio.  Last week Dr. Kessler wrote on the Fructo Borate Complex, a product that he has used a great deal in his practice.  In this email we will learn from George how to use the Cranberry Pomegranate Synbiotic Formula, as he has used it with great success.

Dr. Goerge Kessler on the Cranberry Pomegranate Synbiotic Formula:

This is one of BioImmersion's first products. It was developed to provide powerful support for a healthy urinary tract, improve the cardiovascular system, and suppress bacterial and fungal growth.  While these are good things, the benefits of berries goes much further than this.

There is a Biennial Symposium on Berry Health Benefits. The fifth Symposium highlights were published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry in 2014.  The Symposium showcased recent research supporting positive effects of berry consumption on human health and disease.

The Journal of Gerontology series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences published in October 2013 studied the effects of a cranberry-containing botanical on life span and longevity. Cranberry consumption was associated with increased longevity and survival in both males and females. It was thought that cranberry promotes healthy aging by increasing stress responsiveness.

The Journal Advances in Nutrition (November 2013)  found that the proanthocyanidins (phenolic bioactive ingredients) found in cranberries had health effects on the urinary tract, cardiovascular health, oral health and gastrointestinal epithelial (protective and functional lining of the gastrointestinal tract) health.

The book " Bioactives in Fruit" published June 2013 found that "Due to its rich content of polyphenols, specifically flavinoids, the cranberry is linked to different bioactives, including inhibition of bacterial adhesion, bacteriostatic, anti-inflammatory activities and modulation of signal transduction, which may lead to improved urinary tract, cardiovascular, oral and gastrointestinal health."

The FASEB Journal (April 2014) found that high polyphenol content of cranberries improved glucose regulation and HDL cholesterol in healthy but overweight individual,  resulting in reduced cardiovascular risk factors.  This same journal in March 2013 found cranberry proanthocyanidins affect human prostate cancer cell growth via cell cycle arrest resulting in altered cancer cell activity.

Cranberries contain an active ingredient D-Mannose which prevents Flagellated bacteria (the most common cause of urinary tract infections are flagellated bacteria from the rectum) from sticking to the bladder wall thereby preventing bladder infections.

Pomegranate, another of our important ingredients like wise was found to provide many positive health effects.

The British  Journal of Nutrition (March 2013) found phenol-rich extracts of pomegranate alleviated tissue inflammation and helped with high cholesterol (both total and LDL), microbial infections and cancer. It was helpful in glucose tolerance, increasing the pool of good bacteria in the gut, inflammation in the gut and visceral (belly fat) adipose tissue.

The Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism (October 2013) found Pomegranate Polyphenols lowered lipid peroxidation in adults with type 2 diabetes. It further stated that pomegranate improved liver function in these patients.

The Health Sciences Research Commons of The George Washington University Library in 2013 published an article showing Pomegranate improved hypertension and cardiovascular health.

The review article in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine October 2013 found that Pomegranate:

    1. was a very potent antibacterial agent against foreign bacteria but had, at the same time, beneficial effects on our "good bacteria".
    2. enhanced wound healing
    3. reduced oral Bacteria and reduced plaque
    4. helped gingivitis and periodontitis
    5. inhibited anti-bacterial resistance
    6. enhanced antibiotic susceptibility
    7. helped in viral infections and food born viral pathogens.

The European Journal of Nutrition (August 2014)  found that pomegranate can improve bone health through decreased inflammation and oxidative stress in post menopausal women.

In addition to all of the above Cranberry Pomegranate Synbiotic is loaded with 15 Billion cfu/cap of good and necessary "pro-biotic" bacteria helpful for many human functions along with the pre-biotic inulin which feeds these good bacteria.

    George Kessler, DO

    Clinical Notes:

  • Summarizing Fructo Borate's Benefits

    Dear Friends

Can you idenitify this beautiful creature? Can you identify this beautiful creature?

With great pleasure and joy we introduce BioImmersion's medical director - George J Kessler, DO. His 2000 book, The Bone Density Diet: 6 weeks to a strong body and mind, has received great reviews.

In this newsletter,  Dr. Kessler writes about the Fructo Borate Complex as he has used it successfully in his practice for over nine years. Make sure to read Clincal Notes for Dr. Kessler's suggested use of Fructo Borate.

Dr. George Kessler on boron and Fructo Borate:

Boron is a mineral that plants access from the soil.  It is contained in the cell membranes of every plant.  If the soil is of poor quality the plants grown in it will lack boron.  The Journal of the American College of Nutirition (Feb 2014) looked at dietary vitamin and mineral consumption in the United States from 2007 to 2010 and found large parts of the population did not get adequate levels of these nutrients from the foods they ate.  They recommended taking supplements to make up for these common deficiencies.

Boron in a natural food form such as fructoborate can be much more potent and much less toxic than synthetically manufactured boron supplements.  Boron from food sources can also be much more bioavailable than synthetic sources.

Although boron is considered a trace mineral, it has many important and necessary functions in the human body.  To paraphrase a July 5, 2014 article published in The Journal of Trace Element Medical Biology:

In human studies, boron is a bioactive element that beneficially affects bone growth and central nervous system function, alleviates arthritic symptoms, facilitates hormone action and is associated with a reduced risk of some types of cancer. In the medical book Breast Cancer- Current and Alternative Therapeutic Modalities (2011, chapter 5, 2.1 it is stated "A diet with low boron has been found to lead to a number of general health problems and to increase cancer risk. The most common symptoms of boron deficiency include arthritis, memory loss, osteoporosis, degenerative and soft tissue cartilage diseases, hormonal disequilibria and a drop in libido.

The chapter goes on to detail the information to support this quote. Keeping in mind the various and intertwined effects boron has on the entire human body, I will try to isolate some of the individual areas that boron is important in.

    Bone Metabolism:

One of the most researched uses for boron is in its relationship to bone metabolism, how it affects calcium, magnesium, vitamin D metabolism and bone formation and loss.  It has been shown that boron has very important and useful effects on bone health and development.  The National Osteoporosis Foundation states that, "Millions of Americans—54 million to be exact—have low bone density or osteoporosis.  In fact, about one in two women and up to one in four men over the age of 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis."

While osteoporosis is a disease influenced by many factors, mineral composition of the bone is of utmost importance.  Boron helps both the uptake of calicum and magnesium into the bones and decreases the excretion of both through the kidney.  This is very helpful in both the treatment and prevention of kidney stones and in lowering parathyroid hormone levels in some patients.

Boron also decreases subacute inflammation, which is a factor in bone loss.  In Dec. 2013 The Biological Trace Element Research Journal printed an article stating that in human studies, boron protects the bones against inflammation disruption of the equilibrium between bone reabsorption and bone deposition.

This same journal printed an article in July 2001 showing that boron added to estrogen "significantly increased serum Ca, P, Mg and osteocalcin concentrations" resulting in increased bone growth.  Deficiencies of trace elements slows down the increase of childhood/adolescent bone mass and accelerates bone loss after menopause or in old age" Clinical Chemistry Laboratory Medicine Aug. 2013.

The American Journal of Biomedical Sciences Oct. 2011 published an article showing that plant based boron could, in 14 days, decrease the symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knee.  The article further found that taking boron also resulted in increased levels 1,25(OH)vitamin D.  Clinical intervention in Aug 2014 published an article that found the same relief of osteoarthritis symptoms in 14 days as found in the previous study.

Experimental and Toxicologic Pathology Jan 2012 found that boron played a protective role in lowering the genotoxic effects of heavy metals by its antioxidant capacity. Biological trace element Research April 2014 found that levels of boron in the 40 mg/L range could increase weight, organ indexes, and antioxidant capacities of spleen and improve the speen tissue structure.  There is a toxicity level of boron at over 640 mg/L.

    Hormone Balancing:

Toxicology Ind. Health Jan. 2013 found boron decreased body weight, leptin, insulin and glucose levels and increased T3 (the thyroid hormone your cells actually use) and carnitine levels in plasma.

Biological Trace Element Reserch April 2013 published an article showing that "there was a significant relationship between age and qualitative values of body mass index for each subject." This shows that there is a "reverse relationship between blood boron levels and body mass index in humans".  This means that low boron levels are associated with increased weight and that high levels are associated with lower body weights.

The Indian Journal of Experimental Biology (March 2012) stated that the consumption of fatty acids, calcium, Vitamin D, and boron with physical activity increased levels of estradiol, testosterone and free testosterone. They also caused a strengthening and higher breaking point of bones.

The journal of Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology (Jan. 2011) stated that Boron possesses widespread properties in biochemistry and nutrition.  It further found that boron had significant biological effects on steroid hormones andinflammatory markers. Signficant decreases in sex hormone binding globulins, CRP, CRP-HS and TNF alpha levels.  Also found were increased levels of plasma free testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, cortisol and Vitamin D along with decreased levels of Estradiol. What this means is that not only can boron help to balance your hormones but can improve the cross talk between your various endocrine glands.

Oral resveritrol and boron supplementation showed a significant decrease in C-reactive protein, N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide and an improvement in the quality of life of individuals in the study (Nutrition July 2012).

The Journal of Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology (April 2011) published an article showing that "added boron and copper had a significant effect on plasma high density lipoprotein  cholesterol fraction."  And went on to state that "plasma lipid contents were also decreased by addition of copper and boron in the ration."  What this means is that boron can affect blood cholesterol levels in good ways.

This was further found in the Journal of Diabetes (Mar. 2014) which stated that boron containing compounds could result in decreased hepatic and blood levels of lipids and that this may represent a novel approach for threating diseases with aberrant lipid homeostasis.

    Anti Cancer Research:

Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine (Oct 2011) found that boron could reduce cancer risk and had beneficial effects on oxidative stress, central nervous system function, hormone facilitation, immune response, arthritis, bone growth and inflammation.

Anti-Cancer Agents in Medicinal Chemistry (May 2010) found that consumption of "boron containing compounds resulted in significant decrease in the risk for prostate and cervical cancer, and decrease in lung cancer in smoking women."  They also showed promising chemotherapeutic effects for specific forms of cancer.

Much more can be said about boron, i.e. its ability to down regulate the immun system, its antiaging effects, its lowering of CRP, but enough said for now.

    Clinical Notes:

    To health practitioners:

Assuming that you are doing before and after tests, a typical dosage pattern would be to begin with one capsule of Fructo Borate Complex with breakfast and one with lunch for about 2 to 4 months.  After this trial period re-evaluate the lab tests, symptoms, etc to see the change in the parameters that you are following—bone formation and loss, pain, cholesterol levels, urinary excretion of calcium and/or magnesium, parathyroid hormoes, sex and stress and hormones etc. then adjust the dose accordingly.

  • Fructo Borate's interaction with OA

    Dear Friends

Can you idenitify this beautiful creature? Can you identify this beautiful creature?

In our last email we highlighted the research on Fructo Borate’s ability to help reduce C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in the blood, and the potential positive effects  this lowering may have on the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD).

This week we will share the initial 2011 pilot study research from Romania on Fructo Borate supplementation and the findings that it supports the prevention and reduction of osteoarthritis.

The study:  Romulus Scorei et al. Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Pilot Study to Evaluate the Effect of  Calcium Fructoborate on Systemic Inflammation and Dyslipidemia Markers for Middle-Aged People with Primary Osteoarthritis, Bio Trace Elem Res., Dec 2011;144(1-3):253-263.  Romulus Scorei et al. sought to determine whether 15 days of dietary supplementation with calcium fructobotate could acutely modulate inflammatory and lipid blood markers in individuals with primary osteoarthritis.

Out of 116 initial subjects 60 completed the study as designed.   The aim was to compare the effects of fructo borate to placebo on subjects diagnosed with knee primary osteoarthritis.  The inflammatory biomarkers looked at were C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate.

The calcium fructo borate showed beneficial effect on the inflammatory markers for all groups subjected to the treatment.  This study suggests that short-term (2 weeks)fructo borate  supplementation in patients with osteoarthritis symptoms has a favorable prognosis.

    Sincerely yours,

    Seann Bardell

This amazing primate is a Ring-tailed Lemur, "posture-child" for the Central Park Zoo.  We just got back from a week in New York City and my morning heavenly runs in Central Park, where I saw many ring-tail postures, inspiring me to show you this lemur.

Lemurs are found only on the island of Madagascar. Ring-tails live in  troups of 6 to 30 animals.  Both sexes live in a troop, but a dominant female presides over all.

Ring-tails lemurs, unlike the other four genuses of lemurs who spend most of their time in the trees, spend much of their time on the ground also.

  • Fructo Borate Complex reduces CRP

    Dear Friends

Can you idenitify this beautiful creature? Can you identify this beautiful creature?

Fructo Borate Complex is a very exciting product: it naturally duplicates the molecular structure of boron as it is found of food—it is always found bound to carbohydrate.

In studies, by taking one to two capsules a day, Fructo Borate has been shown to help prevent and slow down osteoporosis, reduce the inflammation in osteoarthritis, and selectively increase steroid hormones in the blood—testosterone, DHEA and Vitamin D3   level.  It also decreases C-reactive protein levels.

But Fructo Borate does much more.

Let's focus on cardiovascular disease and Fructo Borate's ability to reduce CRP.

First of all CRP has been shown to be a very important marker for the potential of CVD.

Ridker P, et al. C-Reactive Protein and Other Markers of Inflammation in the Prediction of Cardiovascular Disease In WomenN Engl J Med 2000; 342:836-843.

The researchers conducted a prospective control study among 28,263 apparently healthy postmenopausal women over a mean follow-up period of three years to assess the risk of cardiovascular events associated with base-line levels of markers of inflammation.  Of the 12 makers measure CRP was the strongest univariate predictor of the risk of cardiovascular events.

What is the evidence that Fructo Borate support reduction of C-reactive protein levels?

Militaru C, et al. Oral resveratrol and fructo borate supplementation in subjects with stable angina pectoris: Effects on lipid profiles, inflammation markers, and quality of life, Nutrition 2012, 1-6.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of short-term (60-d) oral supplementation with fructo borate, resveratrol , and their combination with stable angina patients.  There was a significant decrease of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein in all groups.  This decrease was greater (39.7% at 60 d) in the Fructo Borate alone group, followed by the resveratrol plus fructo borate group (30.3% at 60 d).

As you can see the Fructo Borate by itself has demonstratable health benefits. Boron is critical for the proper functioning of many important metabolic pathways. The problem is the top soil in many areas of US is depleted in boron which means that the crops produced from such soil will be deplete in boron.  Supplementing with a boron supplement such as the Fructo Borate makes sense.

    Sincerely yours,

    Seann Bardell

  • Diversity in Diet, Important for Health

    Dear Friends

Can you idenitify this beautiful creature? Can you identify this beautiful creature?

Does the key to our overall good health have anything to do with eating more fruits and vegetables? When the Harvard School of Public Health recommends we eat between 5 to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, variety rules. As the article says, "More Matters,"  but why?

Our early beginnings as a human species were spent as hunters and gatherers (foragers and scavengers).  We lived with nature and ate from her table wildcrafted roots, nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables. Our genes, our metabolic and physiologic pathways depended on a diversity of nutrients in order for these pathways to fully reflect and manifest our full genetic potential.

Today what do we do?  The average American eats somewhere between 1 to 3 servings of fruits and vegetable a day and this puts our population at risk to chronic degenerative diseases.  Check out Raj Patel's illuminating book, Stuffed and Starved.  There are now in the world over a billion people who are starving and a billion people who are overweight.  Both groups are basically malnourished.

It is tough to change our diets and add 13 servings of fruits and veggies. Even harder is the fact that fast foods are addicting. Even when we eat healthy foods we have a tendency to "narrow down" and select the same foods over and over again.  But the reality is that the pathways to health can get turned on by bringing in the full spectrum of nutrients from fruits and vegetables.  And, this is another reason why we designed the therapeutic foods supplements. We felt we needed to expand our own diets! These products are meant to elegantly bring into our diets the powerful metabolic and health enhancing diverse nutrients that fruits and vegetables provide.  They are meant to make any diet more potent.

    Sincerely yours,

    Seann Bardell
