2025 Research: Broccoli Sprouts and anti-Alzheimer's
Uthaman et al. (2025) created a fascinating animal study with broccoli sprouts and their high sulforaphane content.
The study unfortunately uses mice, which as you know, is not something I support. At the same time, I was unable to stop reading the article, it is for sure a scientific geek's dream with the most minute details of exact design, method, materials, tests, and analysis. Article
What they found was that the anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effect of the broccoli sprouts on brain tissue is very high. The sulforaphanes in the broccoli sports showed a great Neuroprotective ability against amyloid beta neurotoxicity, which is believed to cause Alzheimer's disease.
The tests, such as water maze experiment, passive avoidance test (exploring new things)- both demonstrated the capacity to maneuver new environments easily and remember, learning and retaining the new information.
There were other tests as well that showed how the group that received broccoli sprouts were excelling in - such as motor skills and neural behavior (balance, coordination, etc.).
Broccoli sprouts and their sulforaphanes are shown to be an excellent brain food that has the ability to repair neurons and protect the brain from further damage, increase balance, memory, and the general ability to navigate a complicated world.
