Happy Labor Day: Recognizing and Celebrating the Workers
Isn't it interesting that we created a holiday to acknowledge and celebrate the "working class"? Those who actually built and strengthened our country?
The first labor day was celebrated September 5, 1882, in New York City, upon the insistence of labor activists that the government recognizes the contribution of the working class.
The two workers who advocated for this holiday: one a carpenter - Peter J. McGuire, and the other a machinist, Matthew Maguire.
Both McGuire and Maguire held leadership positions at their respective unions. Both wanted the whole country to appreciate the people who work hard to "carve all the grandeur we behold" (McGuire, 1882).
It took a while to pass the laws in each state to adopt the holiday and by June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year, a national holiday.
Labor Day is symbol of the collective work force that has built a country, imperfect as we are, yet united in the efforts to carve out a safe home for everyone.
I am celebrating Seann today, a beautiful worker who built BioImmersion with such love and dedication. I chose a great photo of one of the warehouses Seann built years ago.
Enjoy the holiday!
Yours as always,
Dohrea
