A Vital "Pycho-biotic" (Probiotic) Mix: Mood Disorders During the Winter

Gut-Brain axis has been greatly discussed in the scientific literature. And for a good reason. 

 To understand how different systems in the body communicate with each other, we need to analyze the various neurological conditions and behavioral patterns.

More accurately, the Axis that affects our mood, behavior, among other things (e.g., weight)  is between the Microbiota-Gut-Brain (Kim & Kim, 2023).

It is not the "gut" that needs modulating (although the one cell wall does need protection) - It is the community of organisms called the microbiota that we need to change with the right kind of psychobiotics

As we have discussed previously, psychobiotics are foundational probiotics, prebiotics - fiber such as inulin to feed these good organisms - and postbiotics, which is the 'soup' of metabolites that probiotics make when they grow (i.e., Supernatant). 

Kim & Kim published in 2023 a chapter on major depression and the role of the microbiota in regulating emotions and behavior. It is not just the old programs in our mind/brain that cause depression - it is also the communities of organisms we have in our gut. 

Crosstalk between the brain and gut utilizing systems in the body such as the central (brain) and enteric (gut) onerous systems, the endocrine system, immune system, and metabolic system, must function well. 

What happens when a system is down, when communication between systems is down?

Kim & Kim emphasize that when one system is down, the gut-brain axis suffers, which means it is not as simple to restore harmony to the microbiota-gut-brain connection (2023). Key here is to pay attention to all the different systems the brain and gut use for communication.

Boost the immune system, take care of the endocrine system - how about some relaxation and stress reduction (Athanasiou et al., 2022)? and ensure your diet supports a metabolic system. All contribute to the microbiota's health and in turn, the microbiota shifts depression and elevates the mood. 

The role of inflammation in general is also part of the depressive mode of the microbiota - gut - brain axis. Foundational probiotics, short chain fatty acids, a healthy diet all play an important role, as well as reducing sugar, toxins, and stress.

What is so encouraging in this 2023 chapter is that there is much that can be done, and the researchers go into the different markers, probiotics, and dietary changes that can therapeutically handle depression.
