Broccoli, Sulforaphanes, and Osteoarthritis (2024 research)
The team of Davidson et al. (2024) researched how broccoli with high sulforaphane content affect osteoarthritis - pain level and range of motion.
The study is "Two-centre, double-blind, two-arm parallel, randomised placebo-controlled, dietary intervention feasibility trial." - which means it is conducted for the benefit of finding out how dietary interventions work. Study took place in two places: one place was at the University of East Anglia/Norfolk and the other was at Norwich University Hospital, both in the UK.
The trial is conducted in two different locations, and is double-blind, with participants and researchers not knowing which group got the broccoli and which got the placebo. Two-arm parallel refers to the two groups of participants - one receives the dietary intervention (broccoli in this study) and the other receives the placebo.
Radomised means that participants were randomly assigned to each group rather than selectively assigned.
And of course placebo-controlled means that one group receives something akin to broccoli to compare results with the group that actually does receive the broccoli.
Notice that the broccoli has high levels of glucosinolates and hence sulforphases which is what the researchers were actually measuring. The results were positive: pain levels were reduced over time and knee function increased. These results were not observed in the placebo group.
This article has not gone through the peer review process as of yet , it is part of the two universities' online publications.
