L. casei rhamnosus & gut integrity
Dear Friends,
Another example for taking probiotics each morning. Many of our probiotic formulas carry L. casei rhamnosus.
In a 2010 study Fang et al. demonstrated the probiotic L. casei rhamnosus’s possible therapeutic effects:
- its ability to inhibit the secretion of IL-8, a major pathogen-elicited epithelial chemoattractant of the inflammatory responses in salmonellosis. This means that the probiotic L. casei rhamnousus inhibits the reaction in our bodies caused by Salmonella’s endotoxin LPS (a specific toxic material from Salmonella’s cell wall).
- its beneficial effect upon the re-establishment of the intestinal epithelial barrier function after inflammation. L. casei rhamnosus protects the tight junctions of the intestinal wall to maintain cell-wall integrity.
Salmonella caused GI tract infection is an increasingly serious issue. “It causes more hospitalizations and more death than any other foodborn illness. It causes a million cases of food poisoning every year in the US, and over the last decade or so the number of cases has increased by 44% particularly among children and the elderly. Again, we are seeing the pathogenic power of the endotoxin LPS (lipopolysaccharide) as we have in the two previous emails, this time caused by Salmonella. And, we are seeing the protective power of good bugs (probiotics) and fiber—the very fibers and well established probiotic bacteria we employ in our Therapeutic Food Synbiotic Formulas.
