What is your best working supplement?
Chlorella is one of the most powerful superfoods known to humankind, and is renowned for its incredible nutrient content and qualities.
It is a fresh-water, single-cell, microscopic green algae that provides the richest source of chlorophyll per gram of any plant. But there is so much more.
Chlorella provides about 60% protein and it also contains an impressive range of vitamins and minerals, pigments, fatty acids, fiber and growth factor.
In recent years, studies have shown that Chlorella can be clinically used as an adjunct in treatment of many diseases and conditions. I will site a couple of studies that show the great diversity of Chlorella.
Chlorella has high levels of carotenoids such as lutein, zeaxanthin and Beta-carotene. In a study by Nagajaum I. et al. Effect of maternal Chlorella supplementation on carotenoid concentration in breast milk at early lactation, Int. J Food Sci Nutr, 2014 Mar 17, the researchers we able to show that Chlorella intake during pregnancy is effective in improving the carotenoid status of breast milk in early lactation.
Arterial stiffness is a well-established cardiovascular risk factor. In a study by Otsuk T et al. Multicomponent supplement containing Chlorella decreases arterial stiffness in healthy young men, J Clin Biochem Nutr 2013;Nov.53(3):166-9, the investigators show that the intake of a Chlorella containing multicomponent supplement can decrease arterial stiffness.
Chlorella is also useful as a detoxification agent. It is the richest source of chlorophyll in plant kingdom. Chlorophyll cleanses and purifies the blood stream, kidneys, liver and bowel. It can also help prevent bad breath. Chlorella has been successfully used to detoxify uranium, Chlordecone (a harmful chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticide), PCBs, and dioxin. Dioxin has become a universal poison and chlorophyll inhibits dioxin absorption eliminating from the gastrointestinal tract and accelerates dioxin excretion. For the liver’s phase I and II detoxification processes to function well, antioxidants, B vitamins, flavonoids and amino aids are essential. These nutrients are all found in Chlorella. Chlorella also detoxifies mercury, copper, cadmium, lead and arsenic. Chlorella supports healthy bowel movement promoting regularity. It is indeed a hard working supplement!
